Municipal Election Day

June 14, our last day of school, is Municipal Election Day. On the ballot this year is the School Budget approval vote as well as whether or not Gorham wants to continue to require that the school budget be approved by a municipal referendum. There are also other local, regional and state issues being voted on during this election. I would encourage all of you to get out and vote, make your voice heard.

Schedules for Monday and Tuesday

Last week, I asked each team to send me their plans for step up day and for the early release day. It appears that most teams who responded have decided that they would like to have all advisors on hand for the non step-up day activities. This means that there will be no Allied Arts offerings on Monday or Tuesday.

Each advisory will receive their current students assignments via email in the morning. It is at this time that you’ll advise your students as to their placement for next year. You will also get you new student list at the same time. I know we all recognize how much apprehension our students have about what team their on, who is on that team, do they have any friends with them? I can tell you that we have taken every piece of input that was given to us to create teams that reflect the whole grade, Please remind students of that fact and let them know that changing teams is very difficult and requires that one of 4 possible conditions must exist before any changes can be made.

I sent out plans for the step up activities via email last week. Here it is again:

  • The 8th grade will be holding the annual end-of-year cookout (this usually happens on the day of the celebration, but not this year!). This means that we will need to adjust our linch schedule and have the 6th graders eat second lunch at 11:28.
  • Also, we expect (operative word: expect) the 5th grade to arrive between 9:20 and 9:30. The 5th graders will go the auditorium to wait for their 6th grade advisors.
  • We will then announce for the 8th grade students and Ed Techs to bring the 8th graders to the waiting buses for their trip to the high school.
  • When the 5th grade arrives, and are situated in the auditorium, we will call the 6th grade teachers to bring their kids to the gym and then go to the auditorium to retrieve their new advisees.
  • We will then announce for the 7th grade teachers to bring their students to the 8th grade wing and then come down to the gym to get their new advisees.
  • It will be at this time that the step-up activities begin.
  • At the close of the activities, about 10:45,(we will do an all-call to begin this process) the 8th grade will be returning, 6th grade teachers should be bringing their new advisees back to the auditorium.
  • We will announce the appropriate time for 7th grade teachers to send their new advisees back to the 6th grade, and 8th grade teachers to return their new advisees back to the 7th grade.
  • All 8th grade students will be sent to the gym first and then to the auditorium for an activity prior to their cookout.

The lunch schedule will need to be adjusted because of the 8th grade cookout. 7th grade will eat first lunch at 11:02, 6th grade will eat at 11:27. The 8th grade cookout will begin at noon.

The 8th grade will return to their wing for final locker cleanup and general clean up of their team areas. Dismissal will be at about 2:10 as there are very few high school students needing bus transportation.

Tuesday, the dismissal will be at 11:10. All activities are team planned and at 9:15, the 6th grade will be brought to the Auditorium for a video of the Best of the Film Festival video. The 6th graders will return to their wing at 10:45 fro final clean up and dismissal.

Yearbooks

Yearbooks are in and will be distributed on Monday morning by advisory. Students needed to have purchased their yearbooks back in April. There may be some extra books, but we will not make them available until after we are positive that all who ordered and paid for their books actually received them. Please hold of on sending students to the office to see if they can buy one, If there any available, we will announce it tot he whole school.

Thank You for All the Help at the Celebration

I want to thank all of the teachers, Ed Techs and staff who helped to make the 8th Grade Celebration a success. It was a great send off for the 8th graders and all of the prep work done by each of you made this all possible. Thank You!

Teacher Assignments and Schedule

We have completed (I hope!) all of the changes in assignments of teachers and finalized our schedule for next year. I want to thank the members of the scheduling committee: Mike McCarthy, Tracy Williamson, Melanie Doran, Jason Lambert and Terry Bartik for their work on this. It has been a very difficult process as we deal with the large class at the 7th grade. I appreciate the dedication and passion you each shared during this process, and I really appreciate that you gave Susie and I some really good options to choose a schedule that both us believe will work for our students and our school.
