Parent Teacher Conferences

During the last semester, we planned to hold our parent/teacher conferences as we always have, on Thursday and Friday, even though our Early Release Day was on a Wednesday. We can still do that if everyone thought that worked out fine. I would, however, like to hear from as many of you as possible about how you would like to do these conferences.

We could continue to do Thursday, Friday, as we have in the past or we could go on Wednesday night and Friday day. Please send me an email with your preference by the end of the day today so we can send our the notifications to our parents.

EdCamp Maine

I am not sure how many of you have heard of the concept of EdCamps, but it is an idea that we have tried here at GMS a couple of times on a very small scale. A couple of years agao we ran our technology day on the premise of the EdCamp model, one where our staff provides both the attendees and the session leaders.

The website EdCamp Maine describes the day in the following bulleted fashion:

  • An interest driven, purely organic, professional development opportunity that encourages true professional dialogue
  • A gathering of motivated and intelligent educators from a range of content areas and grade levels
  • A series of sessions that may explore a technology tool, a discussion of best practices, or a collaborative presentation focused on current issues
  • An opportunity to engage in peer-to-peer sharing, and to make professional connections
  • A focus on how we use technology to enhance learning experiences

The camp is held on Saturday, March 8 beginning at 8:30 am on the Portland Campus of the Waynfleet School. Registration is free (there’s my favorite word again!) and the camp runs until 3:30 or so, with some “after camp” activities held at some local watering hole. If you are interested in attending this event you can register at the EdCamp Maine Website.

Teacher Peer Observation Training

Several teachers throughout the district will be participating in training to become Peer Observers within the new system of Teacher Evaluation being developed by the district, Under the law passed last year regarding teacher evaluation, part of the process will include peer observers coming in to classrooms and providing professional feedback to our teaching staff.

This training will happen on March 4th in our library. If you have volunteered to become a Peer Observer, you have been notified about this meeting.

Progress Reports

March 7th marks the midpoint of the 3rd semester and also the time we need to have our grades updated for parents on Infinite Campus. Parents will be expecting to see a report on their child’s progress through the 3rd quarter. Please make sure that all of your grades are current at this time.

NECAP Reporting

I mentioned at our last faculty meeting that we have received the results from the October administration of the NECAPs.

I will preface the following by stating what we already knew going into the administration of these assessments, the NECAPs have aligned themselves even more closely to the upcoming Common Core State Standards and as such have created a far more difficult assessment for our students. So, as you can imagine with this preface, we did not improve in our scores as we have in the past few years. We did drop a bit, not precipitously, but enough to make us think about what we need to do differently as we approach the SBAC’s in May of 2015.

I will get each of the students assigned to their teams and release all of the information for you to peruse in the next few days.

March is Music in our School Month

In keeping with the theme of Music in our Schools, Matt Murray, GHS Chorus Director, will be taking the GHS Chorus on tour. He will be at GMS on Thursday, March 6th from 12:30 to 1:45. We will get out a schedule for teams in the next week or so.

Notes from our School Nurse

Teresa has informed me that several of our staff’s CPR accreditation will be expiring soon and need to be updated. If you are one of the few folks who have been certified in CPR here at GMS and you would like to renew that certification, please set aside the date of March 18 for the renewal class. There will be two sessions on that date, 8:00 – 11:00 and 11:30 -2:00. Send Teresa an email indicating your interest.

If you have never been certified for CPR but would like to receive the training, you may do this at this time. Just let Teresa know of your interest.

NextGen and the Portland Sea Dogs Scholarship Opportunity

In conjunction with the NextGen Most Improved Student Program, the Portland Sea Dogs are proud to announce the ninth annual NextGen Field of Dreams Scholarship for 3 deserving students.

The three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded, one to each grade level, k-5, 6-8, 9-12. The scholarship funds will remain in a NextGen College Investing Plan Account until the winning student is enrolled in college. If you have students who are interested in entering the essay writing contest will need to compose their essay on the following prompt: A role model is a person you look up to. Before you begin writing, think about someone you look up to. Why do you admire this person? In 250 words or less, please explain whom you admire and why you admire this person.

All submissions need to include the student contact information, grade and school. The entries must be mailed by Monday, June 30, 2104 to:
